Welcome to A Life Examined

What is the examined life? A life worth living! As I look at the road ahead, I take all the baggage from the past and use it as experience - the pain and the passion, the sorrow and the joy - allowing it to carve wisdom into my mind and hope into my spirit.
There is no experience that can't be useful to me at some point in my life. There is no lesson learned that cannot make a contribution to the future.
A tiny drop of water is a part of the ocean. A tiny speck in the night sky is a ginormous star in the distance. It all depends on perspective.
So, this examined life is to offer reflections in the hope of discussing things which are of value to myself and to others.
Love, Sarah

Love and Marriage - a pause from inner reflection

My husband almost never brings me flowers. But as recently as last week he surprised me with 2 dozen roses... red, not because he's romantic but because he had a choice of red, pink or white and made a random choice.
Funny man. He said he thought of sending me to buy them and I could therefore choose the colour.
'That would miss the point then, Love.'

'Would it?' he replied.
I don't think he was kidding.  I think he really doesn't get the romance thing.
But he tries.

Life isn't a vase full of roses, and marriage isn't all cuddles and embraces (see sculpture strategically located next to flowers). But life and love are what you make it.

Our twentieth anniversary will come up this winter. I may remember 'on the day'. I didn't on our first (he did!), and neither of us remembered 17 or 18. But it doesn't matter. The day doesn't really matter to us, but the life together does.

So if your spouse is forgetful, or doesn't 'get' the romance thing, consider: what does s/he 'get'? Commitment, loyalty, faithfulness - these matter. Because a vase of flowers will inevitably wither and die. Love doesn't have to.

Best to you, also! Our anniversary isn't until March - plenty of time to forget all about it, as we both sometimes do!

Congratulations. I like that you look for the good in the not so perfect situations and the not so perfect people in your life. Twenty years of marriage is a tribute to faithfulness, forgiveness and commitment. My husband and I are approaching our 40th!

Thank you so much, Pam. And congrats on every one of your 40 years together. Life is full of surprises. We are blessed with some consistencies, aren't we!
